The School
Tom Hood is a secondary co-educational comprehensive school situated in the south of the London Borough of Waltham Forest, close to the edge of the London Borough of Newham.
Tom Hood School is a highly successful six form entry school. We are proud of, and value the diversity of languages, cultures and ethnic groups in the school. In total there are over 30 ethnic groups represented.
There are 68 teachers in the school. We also have a large number of staff who work with individual pupils, small groups or by supporting the work of classroom teachers during lessons. These include Learning Support Assistants, a School Counsellor, Learning Mentors, a Speech and Language therapist and a Home/School Liaison Officer. In addition, we are well staffed with administrative and technical personnel, all of whom play a key role in school life.
Tom Hood School was granted Extended school status in 2003. The school has been given additional funding to develop a wide range of support services to benefit the school as well as the local community. These include childcare, health care, extended sports and arts provision, study support and family learning. The initiative has already brought considerable benefits to the school, and will continue to do so over the coming months and years. The additional provision that this enables us as a school to provide is listed elsewhere in the prospectus.
The school is full, on a spacious site and includes extensive hard play areas and an all weather pitch. Much effort has been expended on improving the school environment. Most rooms and corridor areas have now been redecorated and refurbished, and a number of major building works have taken place. Recently, we have extended our ICT provision to five ICT suites and we are in the process of reequipping all ICT rooms with new PCs.
One of the most exciting changes that will affect the school in the future is the plans for Tom Hood School to be completely rebuilt on its present site. It is intended that under DfCS ‘Building schools for the Future’ scheme the school will become an ‘All through school’ catering for pupils from 3 years of age to 18 by 2009.
The staff and pupils are proud of the school and we are impressed by the way that members of the community respect their environment. Visitors to the school often comment on the quality of display and absence of vandalism and graffiti. This is proof that the environment does make a huge difference to pupil attitudes to school and learning. |
